Alexander Oscar Lehner beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather has left his home on earth to be in peace in heaven.
You may have known him as the State Department employee, who served our country in Iran and Sierra Leone as a foreign service officer. Or in his second career in communications for Schering Plough. For the great satisfaction he found in his volunteer work visiting our nation's heroes at the Vet Hospital and delivering meals to those in need. And, of course, the tireless labor of love for our church, First Presbyterian Church of Cranford.
Or maybe you came to know him through one of his many interests and talents. Flyfishing. Hunting. Hiking. Walking and walking and walking. Cooking (if you ever tasted his steak in red wine reduction, you were lucky). Singing psalms in the church choir and belting show tunes around the house. Writing with wit and wisdom. Sampling good wine with cheese on his patio with neighbors.
A man of intellect, class, always gracious and unassuming - he was devoted to God and his family. He listened more than he spoke as a person with patience and stillness.
A month ago he spent a four-day family reunion in the Poconos, including chasing his kids and grandkids on a tree-top Zipline obstacle course. So how does his life story end. Simply. On his last day on this earth he went to the gym because exercising made him feel good and when he came home mentioned 3
people he connected with while there. This is what made him a great man, his ability to engage with life and his surroundings so fully each and every day of his existence.
In lieu of flowers, you can honor him through donations in his name for the Capital Improvement Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, Cranford.
