Anastasios (Tom) Markos, 86, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, passed away on February 25, 2025. He is survived by his wife Angie, his brother Sam, his sons Louis and George, his daughter-in-law Despina, and his four grandchildren Alex, Anastasia, Tom, and John. Tom’s parents, Leonidas (Louie) and Metaxia (Maxine) both immigrated to America during the time of the Great Depression. They worked hard in the restaurant business, preserving their Greek culture while becoming proud Americans. Tom was born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 7, 1938; his brother Sarandos (Sam) was born in 1951. Rather than follow his father into the restaurant business, Tom owned a series of gas stations, climaxing with an Exxon station in Bloomfield, New Jersey, that he ran for thirty years. He was highly involved in the New Jersey Gasoline Retailers Association and helped guide and train new business owners. He married his wife Angeline (Angie) Karedis of Mitchell, South Dakota, herself the child of two Greek immigrants, in 1962, and fathered Louis (1964) and George (1965). In 1969, he moved his family to Mountainside, New Jersey, where he lived until he and his wife retired to Tarpon Spring, Florida, in 2001. Tom was a true family man who loved nothing more than taking his family on vacations around the country and in Greece, Canada, and Mexico, eating at fine restaurants, and hosting endless pool parties at his home. He was a lover of history, reading, movies, and sports, and was himself an accomplished basketball player and golfer. He taught his sons to be men of their word, to love both their country and their Greek heritage, and to devote themselves to their families. He will be greatly missed by his family who remember him as a warm, generous, and funny man with a true Greek zest for life. May his memory be eternal!
