Mrs. Barbara A. Short age 78 of Westfield passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at home. She was born in Westchester County in New York on April 27, 1927 and has lived in Westfield for many years.
Barbara was a graduate of Middlebury College and received her Masters Degree from Swathmore College. She was employed for many years as a research librarian for Exxon-Mobil before retiring in 1982 after 31 years of service.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, Abram T. Short who passed away on September 23, 1994. She was also predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Herschel, her brother, John Schobinger and a nephew, George Herschel II. She leaves behind her sister, Trudy Battershall, 16 nieces and nephews and a large number of close and caring friends.
Mrs. Short was a great music lover as well as a supporter of animal and environmental groups. She was also known for her keen wit and intense belief in issues that were important to her. Barbara enjoyed hiking in the Alps and skiing in Europe as well as many places in the US. She was an accomplished swimmer and took part in many syncronized swimming competitions. She will be deeply missed and remembered by many.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the environmental organization of your choice.
Barbara's family would like to publicly thank her caregivers at Overlook Hospital, Runnells Hospital and Atlantic Hospice. They would especially like to thank Pat Haran and her very special home caregiver from Atlantic Home Care, K.K. Go in Peace.
