Obituary for Bonnie McKevitt
Bonnie Lynn McKevitt of Westfield passed away on September 6, 2022 at the age of 79, following several years' battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Bonnie was born September 12, 1942, in Jersey City, NJ to George and Isabelle. She grew up in Jersey City and over the years also lived in Cedar Grove, Westfield, and Cranford.
Bonnie graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City in 1960 and completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Jersey City State College.
Her passion was education, serving as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years. She started her teaching career in Secaucus, then taught in Bloomfield, but spent the bulk of her career teaching in the Parsippany Troy-Hills school district. While she taught various grades, she was most proud of teaching the Gifted and Talented Program, which she did at the completion of her career. Over the years, Bonnie maintained relationships with her students well into their adulthoods. They would often return to visit, update her on their lives and careers, and thank her for the inspiration she provided.
Bonnie's other passion in life was travel. While she and her friends traveled broadly and to six continents, including a safari in Africa, to El Capitan in Yosemite, to view polar bears in the arctic, her favorite destination was always Italy and in particular, Tuscany. She once even combined her passions, teaching for a while at an American school in Venezuela.
Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 7 pm at Gray Funeral Home, Westfield, with a service at 5:30 pm.
Her friends and family fondly remember her pride that her legal name was "Bonnie", her love of Christmas, her generosity, and her joie de vivre.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Carole Mueller. She is survived by her brother George and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Bonnie's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Society at https://www.alz.org/
