Charles William Plungis, 79, of Westfield NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at Overlook Hospital after a long and courageous battle against melanoma. Charles was born on August 15th 1941 in Elizabeth NJ. He graduated from Hillside High School in June of 1959 and then entered the United States Coast Guard where he served from July of 1959 through July of 1963. Charlie was a member of the Hillside Auxiliary Police. He served as a U.S. Letter Carrier in Westfield, NJ and retired after 40 years of diligent service. Charlie befriended the residents along his route and his kind personality brought a smile to everyone he met. His hobbies included fishing, participating in softball and bowling leagues, along with fun trips to Atlantic City. He was an avid sports fan enjoying everything from football to Nascar. Charlie was the first person to bowl a 300 game in the Vernon â McMillan mixed league at the Four Seasons Lanes. It was the first perfect game in the 25 year history of the league. Charlie enjoyed card games with friends that were full of laughter and fun, Union meetings, trips to Vegas, summer vacations on Long Beach Island, dressing up on Halloween to greet the neighborhood kids, and most of all the time he spent with family during holidays, birthdays or backyard barbeques. Charlie was a parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Annette Palumbo, his daughters, Darlene Kim Scheuermann, Donna Lynn Saulnier and husband Michael Augustus, Jennifer Mee and partner John Mitchell, Stefanie Hansen and husband George, Andrea Butler and husband John, and his son, Matthew Palumbo and wife Christine. Charlie (affectionately known as Poobah) is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Tara, Rebeccah, Shane Augustus Charles, Alex, Megan, Annie, Katie, Eliana, Matthew, Nathaniel and eight great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jennie Plungis, his son-in-law, Steven Scott Mee, his grandson Ryan Christopher Mee and his beloved pet Benji. We have all been blessed to have you in our lives. May God hold you safely in the palm of his hand until we meet again.
Visitation will be held at Gray's Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield on Thursday June 24, 2021 from 4 to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am Friday June 25, 2021 at Immaculate Heart Of Mary R.C. Church in Scotch Plains.
