Doris S. Rice

Doris E. Rice, 96, passed away at Arbor Glen, a continuing care community in Bridgewater, NJ, on October 5. She was born March 6, 1917 in Wilson Boro, PA. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1934. She was married to Irwin S. Rice, Jr. in November 1940 and the marriage lasted for 62 years. After WWII the couple settled in NJ. Mrs. Rice lived in Westfield, NJ for 44 years before moving to Arbor Glen with her husband in 1997. Her life's work was service to her family and her community. She helped establish the library at Jefferson Elementary School. She later volunteered at Edison Jr. High School. She helped establish the library at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield and was active there for many years. In addition to her volunteer work she enjoyed gardening and playing bridge. She is survived by a son, Irwin S. Rice III, a daughter, Debra R. Metcalf, a son-in-law Thomas N. Metcalf and a granddaughter, Alison S. Metcalf. Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church.
