Elizabeth, NJ â Dorothy "Dottie" Hingel, a long-time Westfield resident, joined the angels in heaven on March 12, 2017 at Father Hudson House surrounded by family. Born Dorothy Claire Smigelsky to parents Joseph and Margaret in1933, she was the oldest of four siblings. Dorothy attended St Mary's High School where she graduated with honors in 1952, was a class officer and a member of the dance committee, reading club and stenography club. Dorothy worked in a variety of positions as a young adult but became a full time homemaker after the birth of her children. After her children were grown Dottie babysat for other children in Westfield who she remained close to up until the time of her death.
Dottie spent most of her life in Westfield with her husband Arthur and their three children, Sherl, Stephen and Richard. After her husband's death, Dottie moved into Second Westfield Senior Citizens Housing as one of the original residents and remained there for approximately twenty years. She was very active resident serving as the Tenants Association President, running movie and bingo nights for many years, volunteering for many activities and events. She was an active member of the Community Emergency Response Team and the Union County Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
Dottie loved to dance any time she could and anywhere, preferably the jitterbug. She loved to play bingo and take trips to Atlantic City with her friends. She enjoyed her family vacations in Lavallette, Long Beach Island and Wilmington VT. She most loved time with her grandchildren Ryan and Taylor who brought her such joy at family parties, at their sporting events or just hanging around watching Jeopardy or having a pizza.
Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Arthur, her son Stephen, her brother Joseph and her parents Joseph and Margaret. She is survived by her daughter Sherl Brand and her husband Owen, her grandsons Ryan and Taylor Brand, her son Richard Hingel her stepdaughter Holly Ann Schumacher, her sister and her husband Margie and Billy Sharkey, her brother Steven Smigelsky and his wife Anne and her many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by so many people. To celebrate her life there will be a wake on Sunday March 19th 6pm-9pm at Grays Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street Westfield, NJ.
