Edwin C. Younghouse, 83, long-time resident of Cranford, NJ, died after a long illness on November 9, 2007 at the King James Care Center of Chatham.
Born in East St. Louis, Illinois to Edwin Albert and Alma Dieterle Younghouse in 1924. Mr. Younghouse graduated first in his high school classand attended Cornell University on a scholarship. There he majored in Chemical Engineering, but interrupted his college days to join the US Army during World War II. He served in Europe, where he participated in efforts to keep Allied military units supplied with petroleum products.
After his overseas service, Mr. Younghouse returned to his studies, met and married his wife, Helen Catherine Klier and completed his degree at Cornell in 1949. He earned a masters degree in automotive engineering from the Chrysler Institute, and later joined the Research and Development division of Standard Oil of NJ (Esso and then later Exxon).
Mr. Younghouse was active with Boy Scout Troop 176 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cranford where he also served as an Elder. In 1985, after more than 30 years at Exxon, he and his wife Helen retired to Vero Beach, Fl. In Florida, Mr. Younghouse enjoyed playing tennis, woodcarving and doing volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the Treasure Coast Rock and Gem Club and the Indian River Genealogical Society. They returned to New Jersey in 2006 and lived in Florham Park.
He is survived by Helen, his wife of 59 years and three of their children; Lawrence and his wife Mary Rose of Boonton, Paul of Florham Park and Carol Younghouse Berns and her husband Jeffrey of Cranford. Another son, Richard died in 1992.
Additionally, he is survived by two sisters; Evelyn Browne of Belleville, Ill and Marjorie Fricke of Collinsville, Ill. He will also be deeply missed by his grandsons; Steven Joseph Younghouse of Lynchburg, Va., Mark Edwin Younghouse of Highland Park, Ill, Robert Hanson Berns and Ryan Thomas Berns of Cranford and also his great grandson, Benjamin Joseph Younghouse of Lynchburg, Va.
