Eleanor Frances Smith, artist, activist and community leader, died after a brief illness on July 30, 2008. She was 97, born Eleanor Frances Pippy in St Joseph, Missouri on March 25th, 1911. Six years later, the family moved to West Orange, New Jersey where she graduated from high school. She then attended Beaver College and Pratt institute of Art.
From painting sets for Community players to showing and selling her own work, her creativity and artistic ability were major aspects of her life. She enjoyed each season of both symphonies and opera. A docent at the Miller Cory house her community involvements included the Westfield Women's Club Fortnightly, League of Women Voters, C.R.O.P, Amnesty International and a Gnosis group. Her
true base was her Presbyterian church and her emblem her many roles with Church Women United. She was currently historian for CWU and a docent at the
historical house.
She is predeceased by her husband Clarence B. Smith, Jr. (Cap) in 1978, her grandson Christopher M. Smith and son George Fredric Smith in 2003. She is survived by a daughter, Sasha Eleanor Slayton, a son, C. Blake Smith, III, five grandchildren, Peter N. Slayton, Geoffrey B. Smith, Bradford L. Smith, Heidi S. Smith, Nicholas K. Smith, and two great grandchildren, Zachary A. Smith and Tilden H. Smith.
A memorial service will be held at the Westfield Presbyterian Church, Sunday August 10th at 1 PM, followed by a reception at the church. Donations are
