Ethel Heim, 106, Longtime Cranford Resident Mrs. Ethel Mapes Heim, longtime resident of Cranford, passed away peacefully on February 22nd at her home at the age of 106. Born in New York City in l904, Ethel lived with her family in Brooklyn where she participated in the first Children's Garden program at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. In l916 the family moved to Cranford into the home where she resided for 95 years. Ethel graduated from high school in Cranford and attended Queen's College in Charlotte, NC. In l925 she married Everett A. Heim, a resident of Roselle Park who became President of the Roselle Park Trust Company. In Cranford, Ethel was a member of First Presbyterian Church since l917, where she served as deaconess and belonged to the Margaret Green Society. Her civic activities included the Cranford Visiting Nurse, serving as president; the Garden Club of Cranford; the Wednesday Morning Club; the Cranford Historical Society; the Westfield Symphony; and the Union County Rhododendron Society, serving as Treasurer. Her support of Union County College was truly special, through her longtime service in Friends of the College from its earliest days, and in later years as a member of the Board of Trustees. Ethel was predeceased by her parents, Anna Mitchell Mapes and Charles Lewis Mapes, her husband, Everett A. Heim, her daughter, Adriane Heim Lyman, and her son, Everett Ogden Heim. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Heim Head and husband William of Houston, TX; her granddaughters, Judith Lyman Snow and husband James of Basking Ridge NJ, Gwen Lyman Apfel and husband Patrick of Paris, France, Allison Head Schovee and husband Stephen of Denver CO, Elizabeth Head Black and husband Milton of Corpus Christi TX; her grandson, Nelson B. Head and wife Jane of Evanston IL; her great-grandchildren, Kevin Snow, Valerie Snow, Eric Apfel, Alexandre Apfel, Kathleen Head, Amy Head, Margaret Head, Elizabeth Schovee, Matthew Schovee, Milton Black III and Nelson Black. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the 7 years of loving care given by Mary Gibore, Susan Marita and Rebecca Muthondu. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on March 5th at the First Presbyterian Church, Cranford, where Rev. Valencia Norman will officiate. Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception to be held in the adjacent Mettam Lounge.
