Florence Rita Groves Schembs, 96 of Westfield, NJ
passed away on Tuesday July 22, 2008 at the Center for Hope Hospice, Peggy's House in Scotch Plains, NJ.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 25th from 2-4 &
7-9 pm at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield at 10 am, where she has been a member for many years.
Mrs. Schembs was born in Newark, NJ on November 25, 1911 to Aloysious Joseph Groves and Florence Barber Groves. Florence was a 1931 graduate of Barringer High School in Newark. "Grovsy" as she was known, excelled in athletics, foreign language clubs, the science club, cheering squad, theatre groups and also had a special interest in art. She was married to Douglas C. Schembs. on February 23, 1946 at St. Charles Borromeo's Roman Catholic Church in Newark. After her marraige she lived in Newark and Elizabeth before moving to Westfield in 1952.
In 1943 she was certified as a Nurses Aide with the Newark Chapter of the American Red Cross. Florence also worked in the Industrial Policy Department of the Prudential Insurance Company and at Adler's Jewelry Store in Westfield.
Florence was predeceased by her husband, Douglas C. Schembs, Sr. She is survived by her son, Douglas C. Schembs, Jr. and his wife, The Rev. Lois Schembs and a granddaughter Jennifer Schembs. She will also be deeply missed by her four nieces, two nephews and two cousins.
