Frances Vreeland Ryder

Frances V. Ryder, 89 died peacefully at her home in Cranford on August 13, 2007 following an illness.

Nee Vreeland, she was born in Kingston, NJ in 1917 a decendant of 17th century Dutch settlers. Married in 1940 to Hugh Ryder of New Haven, she and her husband plied the restaurant trade in resorts up and down the east coast, including those at The Robin's Nest: Lake Mohonk Mountain House, NY; Fred Waring's at Shawnee, PA; and the Hillsborough Country Club, FL.

Settling in New Jersey in 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Ryder owned and actively managed several restaurants, including concessions at The Geiger Counter, Westfield and Koos Brothers, Rahway, and ownership of The Plantation in Scotch Plains, and from 1948 to 1984, The New Hampshire House Restaurant and Bunch of Grapes Pub, today known as Winberie's.

It was also in 1948 that the couple discovered their first, antique music box while on a pleasure trip to New Hampshire. In time they decorated their restaurants with music boxes, monkey organs, and coin-pianos for the entertainment of the public; they organized yearly collectors' tours to museums in Europe; and they even sent thier sons to Switzerland to learn the field. Mrs. Ryder and her husband occupied leadership positions in The Music Box Society, International for more than thirty years and hosted many MBSI's meetings at their home and restaurants. A long time friend of the collector Murtogh Guinness. Mrs. Ryder and their family more recently introduced the Guinness collection to the Morris Museum. Morristown, where a new wing to display hundreds of musical andanimated instruments is soon to open.

Mrs. Ryder's husband predeceased her. Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie; two sons, Stephen and Jeremie; two grandsons, Robert and William; and two nephews Jeffrey and Keith.

Visitation will be at 11 - 1 PM Friday, August 17th at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 E. Broad St., Westfield, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Frances V. Ryder to the Morris Museum in support of "Mechanical Music Library."
