Fred A. Shorsher, a long-time resident of Westfield, New Jersey and Stuart, Florida, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the age of 89. Mr. Shorsher moved to Westfield in 1956 to become a member of the New York Stock Exchange and floor partner for Ball, Burge and Kraus, at the time the largest regional brokerage firm in the nation.
In 1970 Mr. Shorsher purchased a membership in the New York Stock Exchange - known within the industry as a "seat" - and began his own business of trading stocks for major member firms as a "two dollar broker". A few years later he joined forces with others to found the NYSE member firm of Wall Street Discount Corporation, one of the pioneer firms offering discount brokerage commissions to the public. He retired in 1985 but remained a member of the Exchange until becoming a shareholder in the successor public corporation, the New York Stock Exchange Group.
Mr. Shorsher was born in Ambridge, Pennsylvania in 1918. He was a graduate of Ambridge High School and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. During World War II, then Captain Shorsher of the Army of the United States, was a B-24 pilot and distinguished himself during 70+ combat air missions in North Africa and Italy. He was also a rated pilot of P-38, P-40 and P-51 fighter aircraft.
Mr. Shorsher was an avid golfer and was a member of Echo Lake Country Club since 1956 and of Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart, Florida since 1984.
He was a long-time member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield, New Jersey and of the Mariner Sands Chapel in Stuart, Florida.
He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Duff Shorsher in 2004. Mr. Shorsher is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Nancy J. Shivers of Bay Head, New Jersey and Washington D.C. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Mitchell E. Shivers, Jr. of Bay Head and Mrs. Jane B. Hoffman of Westfield.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2008 at 10:30 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Westfield. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
