George P. Gross
George Paul Gross, 94, of Chatham, NJ, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 in Summit, NJ.
George was born in Tarentum, Pa. to Howard and Clara Gross on December 7, 1923. He grew up in Winter Park, Fla., He married Jane Lion on April 17, 1953 in Short Hills, NJ. He graduated from Rollins College, and received his PhD in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He was a Research Associate for Exxon Corp. for over 30 years, focusing on cleaner burning fuels and receiving patents for his work. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served as a navigation officer aboard the USS Topeka.
In his youth, George was active as a Boy Scout, attending the first National Jamboree and attaining the Eagle Scout rank. He remained active in scouting with his sons, as a leader in both Troops 71 and 77 in Westfield. As a scout leader, he taught young men to become active citizens who grew up to contribute to their community and beyond. George had a lifelong passion for nature, and outdoor activities such as birdwatching and hiking.
He was a member of the Westfield Historical Society and also active in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). George was also a long time communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
George is survived by his wife Jane, son George M. and wife Barbara Wilson, grandson David, son William and wife Sara Scully, granddaughter Natalie, brother Leroy, and wife Annetta.
The family of George wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Overlook Hospital and Juniper Village at Chatham.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Overlook Foundation.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 19th at St. Paul's Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery.
