Helen Isabelle Whitcomb, 101, of Westfield, NJ, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Francis Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway.
Ms. Whitcomb, born on August 28, 1906 in Bayonne, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Royden Page Whitcomb and resided in Westfield for 91 years.
A graduate of Westfield High School, class of 1924, and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, class of 1926, Ms. Whitcomb worked for Irving Trust Company in New York City for 18 years. She was then employed as Church Secretary for The Presbyterian Church in Westfield for 27 years until her retirement in 1971. After retirment Ms. Whitcomb traveled to Europe, the Middle East, and Bermuda. She was an avid walker and swimmer and she achieved her life-long wish of riding in a hot air balloon at the age of 97 years.
Ms. Whitcomb was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield since 1930; on Board of Deacons 1972-74 (Vice Pres. 1974); 250th Anniversary Committee 1978; Presbyterian Women; Church School teacher, and choir member. She was a member of the first Girl Scout Troop in Westfield, 1918, founding member and past president of Junior Women's Club of Westfield, charter member and past chairman of Fortnightly Group in Westfield. She served on Westfield Committee for the United Nations, member A.W.V.S. (American Women's Voluntary Services) Downtown Manhattan branch during World War II; also Air Raid Warden in Westfield's Civil Defense, World War II; American Red Cross Volunteer in NYC and Westfield, World War II. Volunteer and past member of Board of Westfield Day Care Center, served on Board of Trustees of Westfield Adult School Association; Vice Pres. 1956; President 1957-60; 1963-64; Secretary 1966-67, member Westfield Historical Society and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Ms. Whitcomb will be lovingly remembered by her six nieces and nephews, eight grand
nieces and grandnephews, five great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, and by her many dear friends. Her brothers, Harvey and Richard, predeceased her.
A memorial service celebrating Ms. Whitcomb's life will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, February 16 at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Memorial donations in memory of Ms. Whitcomb may be made to the Westfield Rescue Squad.
