Henry M. Murphy

An angel among us left for home today. Henry martin Murphy was the beloved husband of Beatrice Welch Murphy, who passed before him. His married life was spent in Westfield, NJ and he was active in the Methodist Church there.
He was born in Hackensack, NJ. His childhood was spent in Rutherford, NJ attending the local schools. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Education from New York University.
As chairperson for the Business Department at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, NJ. Henry loved teaching and worked as a substitute teacher after retirement. His favorite past times were Ham Radio Operator, Photographer, croquet, gardening, tennis, Painting in oils and scrabble playing.
Scrabble was his game and during his 101 years many people played scrabble with him, however only a few ever won at his game.
As a painter he was prolific and belonged to the Westfield Art League and the Newton Art League. On his 100th birthday he had an art show in Newton, NJ given by the Sussex County Art Society. For the past 17 years Henry was a resident at the United Methodist Manor in Branchville, NJ and then at Bristol Glen in Newton, NJ. During this time he obtained ministers for the weekly chapel services. he was also the bookkeeper for the Boys Methodist Summer Camp.
He leaves many friends at Bristol Glen United Methodist Retirement Home. He will also be deeply missed by his nieces, Jane Tirrell and Virginia Conway. Nephews Robert F. and Thomas Knoblauch. Great nephews, Robert V. Knoblauch, Peter Knoblauch, Donald Conway and Keith Conway. Great nieces, Kim Mapes, Wendy Thompson, Greta Knoblauch, Kristina Hulse and Lenior Knoblauch. Great - great nieces, Jamie Mapes, Julie Mapes, Pamela Thompson, Amber Rae Hulse, Amy Conway and Emily Conway. Great - great nephew, Brian Conway.
A memorial service will be planned at Bristol Glen at a later date.
