Ian Julian McCarthy of Scotch Plains died suddenly at his home February 26, 2010. He was 49 years old. Ian was the husband of Marcia Young McCarthy, father of Christian, Ryan, and Julian McCarthy. He is the son of Martha Bodnar McCarthy of Bel Air, Maryland and the late Gerard W. McCarthy. Ian grew up in Westfield and attended the Westfield Public Schools. He graduated from Westfield High in 1978. He went on to study at NJSOA and graduated in 1980 with a degree in Architecture. He was a founding partner of McCarthy Kerekes LLC, an architectural firm in Somerset, NJ. He was a member of the AIA. Ian's greatest joys in life were being with his wife and sons, watching and coaching with his sons' sports activities, spending time with family at the Jersey shore and visiting with his family members all over the country. His dream of retirement, when it came, was to live the life of a cruiser on a 40 foot sloop and sail from place to place with his wife. Ian and Marcia had recently booked passage on a bareboat cruise in the British Virgin Islands with family members for this coming summer. Ian and Marcia both enjoyed travel and had honeymooned in Greece after their wedding, and had spent time in recent years in Italy and France with close family members. Ian was a life long member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Cranford NJ, and it was there that he had met and married his wife, the former Marcia Young of Union, NJ, who is also a life long member of Calvary. They were married with family and friends in attendance in September of 1985. Ian sat on church committees and had designed certain architectural changes within the church building. Ian is survived by his wife, Marcia and sons, Christian Joseph, Ryan James and Julian Robert McCarthy, his mother Martha McCarthy, sisters Kathleen and husband Stephen Mihaly of Pittsburgh, Pa, Miriam and husband Richard Cochran of Bel Air, Maryland, brothers Christopher and wife Dory McCarthy of Foresthill, California, and brother Brian McCarthy of Bel Air, Maryland. Also surviving Ian are his father and mother in law Robert and Gertrude Young of Ship Bottom, NJ, and sisters and brother in laws Arlyn Young and Mike Bilby of Connecticut, Barbara and Joel Silverman of Boulder Colorado, Nancy Young of Boca Raton, Florida. He was Uncle to nieces Erica, Achli, Katie, and Meghan, and nephews Tyler, Matthew, Warren and Casey. Visitation Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, Cranford. Funeral services 11 am Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Cranford. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hillside Food Bank, Hillside, New Jersey
