Irene T. Vagelos

Irene Vagelos, 88, passed away on June 16, 2011 She spent nearly her entire life residing in Westfield. She attended Westfield Public Schools and worked after school in her family's New York Candy Kitchen and Westfield Sweet Shoppe. She spent many years as head waitress and candy maker in the business. After the business was sold in 1970, she worked as a secretary at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Family, friends and church were the centers of her life. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church of Newark and Holy Trinity for many years. She was also a member of the Ladies Philoptochos groups and the Trinity Circle. She was a beloved sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was the daughter of Thucydides Vagelos and Elpiniki Stavros Vagelos. She was predeceased by her sisters Artemis Coukos and Aphrodite (Effie) Markos. Her survivors include seven nieces and nephews Dorothy Pantason Elaine Coukos Andrea Blasi John Markos Andrew Coukos Thucydides (Duke) Markos Marigo Markos Chantzis Survivors also include five grand nieces and nephews, eight great grand nieces and nephews, one great great grand nephew and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation will be on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield. Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday June 21, 2011 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity G.O. Church, Ss. Nicholas, Constantine & Helen G.O. Church in Orange/Roseland or the Westfield Historical Society.
