MAHR, IRWIN G
Irwin "Irnie" Mahr 92, formerly of Westfield, NJ passed away peacefully at Angel's Touch of West Friendship, Maryland on Friday, March 6, 2009 after a period of declining health. Born in Newark on July 16, 1916, he was the son of the late George & Louise Mahr. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, earning a B.S. Degree in Personnel & Production. Irnie was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity & the Alpha kappa Psi Fraternity. He received a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. During his undergraduate years, he was involved in basketball, track, and baseball. This enthusiasm for sports followed throughout his life. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers & the St. Louis Cardinals. He knew all the statistics and watched every game. He was a "true blue" fan whether they won or lost. Upon completion of college, he served in the U.S. Army working in Counter Intelligence during WWII.
Mr. Mahr was employed by Standard Oil of N.J. from which Exxon Corporation evolved. He worked in N.J. for many years before becoming the District Manager for the districts of New Hampshire, Vermont, & Connecticut. He returned to N.J. in 1966 to serve as Exxon's District Manager for the Linden District.
During his years with Exxon, he originated, organized & coordinated the "Sell" Esso" Program. He was a member of the N.J. Chamber of Commerce, of the Esso Club for retired employees, & received the District Manager's "Man of the Year" Award for Excellence on 6 occasions. He retired in 1980 from Exxon, after 43 years of service.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Westfield, N.J.
A loving & devoted husband, father & Pop Pop, he is survived by his 3 children. Marjorie L. LeTourneau of CT., Marilyn K. Ford of Maryland & Richard L. Mahr & his wife, Carla of TN. His 7 grandchildren-- Steven & Diane LeTourneau, Michael, Robert, Timothy & his wife, Jenn Ford, Stacy & Scott Mahr. 2 great-grandchildren-Kevin & Dylan LeTourneau. Irnie was preceded in death by the "Love of his Life," his wife of 58 years, Luella (Zahn) Mahr, 2 son in-laws-Arthur LeTourneau & Wayne Ford, a sister June Reed, & a brother Lester Mahr.
Visitation will be held on March 9, 2009 from 10 - 11 am., followed by a graveside service & burial at Fairview Cemetary in Westfield, N.J.
