A Memorial Mass for Dr. Joaquim A. Cardona will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11 am in Immaculate Heart of Mary RC Church, 1571 South Martine Ave., Scotch Plains, NJ. Arrangements are by the Gray Funeral Home 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
Dr. Cardona, 80 passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at his home in Westfield. He was born in Portugal and came to the United States in 1953. He has lived in Scotch Plains and Westfield for several years.
Dr. Cardona attended medical school in Lisbon, Portugal. He interned at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth, New Jersey and served a residency at Flower Fifth Ave. in New York City. He also served a residency in Cardiology at Montreal Cardiology Heart Institute in Montreal, Canada and a residency at the VA Hospital in East Orange, NJ.
Dr, Cardona practiced internal medicine and cardiology in the Ironbound Section of Newark and was affiliated with St. James Hospital also in Newark until his retirement.
Dr. Cardona was a member and professor emeritus at the New Jersey College of Medicine. He was a member of the American Medical Association, medical IDAA at Morristown, NJ and a member of the Portugese Mens Association Tertulian Club.
He was predeceased by his son, Michael. Dr. Cardona is survived by his wife Regina, his children; Joaquim A. Cardona, Jr., Richard A. Cardona and John Cholankeril. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Manuel Cardona Avogado and his grandchildren; Tyler, Alexa and Joaquim Ian.
