Lieutenant Commander John F. Ambos, USNR (Ret) of Tinton Falls, formerly of Westfield, died April 22 at home. He was 87. Visitation will be held at Gray Funeral Home, 318 E. Broad Street, Westfield, on Monday, May 5, from 2–4 and 7–9 p.m. Interment will be in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, New Jersey.
Mr. Ambos earned his B.S. at Rutgers University in 1942 and enlisted in the Naval Reserve shortly after graduation. He was commissioned in 1943 and served as Executive Officer on patrol vessels on escort and anti-submarine operations in the Caribbean and the Pacific. He was a participant in the Rutgers Oral History Archives.
For many years he was Commanding Officer of Naval Reserve Surface Division 3-40 in Perth Amboy. He held membership in the Naval Order of the U.S., the Retired Officers Association, the Naval Reserve Association, and the Patrol Craft Sailors Association.
A licensed professional engineer, he was employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone Company and Verizon for 35 years. His last assignment prior to retirement was as District Engineer.
Jack was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield, and was Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 77, B.S.A.
He was twice past president of the Westfield Lions Club and Lion of the Year in 1975. He was named a Melvin Jones Fellow for "dedicated humanitarian services" by the Lions Club International Foundation.
Lending his expertise to the Westfield Senior Citizens I and II, he served on both Boards of Directors for a total of over 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Esme née Chester, and four children: Paul of Highland Park, NJ; Peter of Beaumont, TX; George of Philadelphia, PA; and Jane Campbell of Plainsboro, NJ. He is also survived by a brother, Robert, of Sherborn, MA.
There are six grandchildren: Leonard, John, and Elizabeth Ambos and Karen, Victoria, and Carolyn Campbell.
