John G. Lyp
A True Family Man

John Lyp , 63, of Cranford, a dedicated husband, father of 7 and grandfather of 6, died peacefully on July 4, 2008 at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. He is best know for his faith in God, love of his family and service to those in need. He leaves behind his wife, Mary Ellen, of 40 years, children: Patrick, Patricia, Anne Marie, Ronald, Bernadette, John and Teresa, grandchildren: Andrew, Thomas, Kelly, Madison, Abby and Emma Rose and Sister, Carole Schwartzmann.
John, born in Newark, grew up in Union and graduated from Union High School. He then served in the US Navy and attended RCA Institute in NY. He was employed by Unisys in Madison as well as Emtec in Cranford as a computer technician. Although he enjoyed his work and was successful at it, his true passion in life lie in his faith and family.
Dedicated to his parish, St. John the Apostle Church in Clark, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, was active in the CCD program, participated in the Men's Oasis Breakfast, was an adorer for the Adoration Chapel, and many other unseen ministries to those in need. He volunteered at St. Joseph's Social Services in Elizabeth and Covenant House in Newark. He also worked at St. Joseph the Carpenter School in Roselle fixing and organizing the school's computer lab. He was involved in helping out with the Special Olympics, marching in the Right to Life Marches in Washington DC, attending Men's Retreats and helping the homeless. To John, life was about helping and serving others.
Although ministry played a very important role in John's life, nothing came between him and his family. Family was his life. His love, faithfulness and devotion to his wife Mary Ellen of 40 years, demonstrated his commitment and dedication to their marriage and vows. Through his examples, many important values and morals were imprinted in each of his 7 children which taught them valuable lessons. His selflessness and self-sacrifices allowed each one to achieve personal successes, achievements, triumphs and even failures. Each of which he was there to support.
John always had an ear to listen, a voice to share advice, strong arms for a hug and a winning smile that could cheer anyone up. He was a man of compassion, conviction, and honesty. He loved life and all it had to offer. He will be greatly missed.
