Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" McDiarmid, 81 the Associate for Mission at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, New Jersey, died May 4, 2006 at Overlook Hospital after a short illness.
A lifelong resident of Cranford, Miss McDiarmid graduated from Cranford High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from New Jersey College for Women (Now known as Douglass College, Rutgers University) in 1946, where she majored in music, education and English. She continued her education with courses at Union County College and courses in economics and accounting through her employment with NY Tel until her retirement in 1985.
In her post retirement years she devoted increasing amounts of time to her Church. She served two terms as an Elder and was Clerk of Session. She also served as Moderator of Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Elizabeth and as a Commissioner to the Synod for the Northeast. In her position as Associate for Mission, she coordinated Westfield Church's domestic and international mission activities. She was also involved in the Mission work of the National Church. She was the coordinator of the homeless program and the foodbank program for the local church and maintained an active correspondence with fraternal workers and missionaries around the world.
She has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Westfield Community Center and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Douglass College Alumnae Association. She was a member of the Cranford Historical Society.
Betty is survived by a cousin, Ian Hay, of Surrey, England and by a niece and nephew, Eric Traut and Catherine Hessom, both of California.
A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be held at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield on Friday, the 19th of May, 2006 at 11 am.
