A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 10 am in Holy Trinity R.C. Church, Westfield for Mariano Michael Francese, Jr. age 66 who died on May 28, 2006 in the Community Medical Center, Scranton, Pennsylvania. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements are by the Gray Funeral Home 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
Mr. Francese was born in Brooklyn, New York and lived for many years in Merrick, Long Island and Westfield. For the last two years he maintained his residence in Vero Beach, Florida. He was a graduate of the City College of New York in 1962 obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering.
He was employed as the Regional Director for the New York State Department of Transportation for 30 years.
He then was the executive Vice President for Parsons Brinckerhoff in New York City for several years retiring in Feb. 2004. He continued as a consultant for them until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; New York State Association of Transportation Engineers; New York Building Congress; New Jersey Alliance for Action; New York Regional Plan Association; American Society of Military Engineers. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Alan M. Vorhees Transportation Center of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the New York Association of Consulting Engineers in 2000. Elected to the Board of the New York Building Congress in 2000. Also, the co-chair of the Transportation committee. Elected to the Board of the NEw Jersey Alliance for Action in 1999. Elected to the Board of the Regional Planning Association in 1999. Member of the Transportation and Housing Committee of the New York City Partnership and Chamber of Commerce in 1998. Award for outstanding Support of Minority Engineers from the Rutgers University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers in 1994. Selected as a member of the New York City Delegation to participate in bilateral workshops between the cities of New York and Paris, France in 1992. Bridge man of the Year Award, association for Bridge Design and Construction 1990. He was a judge for Engineering Excellence Competition, New York Association of Consulting Engineers in 1989. NYSDOT Commissioners Special Achievement Award for developing and implementing a junior engineer recruitment and training program which was adopted statewide in 1988. He received an award from LaGuardia Community College for developing and supporting a cooperative education program at NYSDOT in 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Anne (D'Onofrio) Francese of Vero Beach, Fla.. A daughter, Marian Francese of Chatham, a son, Michael Francese of Vienna, Virginia. A sister, Rachel Pepe of Staten Island and a brother Harry Francese of Connecticut. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Grace and Luke.
