Martha (Marti) Boman MacDonald died on July 2, 2009 following complications from cancer and lung disease. Mrs. MacDonald was born in Montgomery, Alabama and spent her formative years in Kansas City, Mo. She attended Stephens College earning an Associate degree and then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA degree. Mrs. MacDonald received her Master's Degree at the University of Mississippi. Excerpts of her graduate thesis on Jackson Mississippi covering the years immediately preceding the Civil War were published and remain today as authoritative accounts for that period.After graduation, Mrs. MacDonald taught Middle School history and English in Bartow, FL and Aniston, AL. In 1954 she married Edmund MacDonald and they lived her early years in suburban Philadelphia and Westchester County New York before settling in Westfield, New Jersey for 30 years. Mrs. MacDonald was a Brownies and Girl Scout leader and was active in numerous Westfield service associations including President of most and an officer in all. She was one of the original founders of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra and served as a Director on its first Board. She taught Sunday School at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a tutor in the Westfield school system. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Naples, Florida. Marti was an avid tennis and accomplished bridge player. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Society and a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR). She was a communicant at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield and Trinity By The Sea Cove in Naples, Florida.Mrs. MacDonald was known for her kind and loving personality that earned her long term friends. She is survived by her husband Ed of fifty four years and children, Mark, Jay, Kelly and Doug and ten grandchildren. A viewing will be at Gray Funeral Home in Westfield, N.J. on July 9th between the hours of 2pm-4pm.
