Martha L. Mayer

Services will be held in the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 12 noon for Martha L. Mayer of Westfield who died peacefully on March 29, 2006 in Genesis Elder Care Center, Westfield. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Mrs. Mayer age 91 was the wife of the late Charles R. Mayer who died in 1982. Mrs. Mayer was born in Birmingham, Alabama and lived in Richfield, NJ before moving to Westfield in 1950.
Mrs. Mayer was employed as an Accessory Buyer for the Davidson - Paxon Company of Atlanta, Georgia, an affiliate of R.H. Macy's. In 1947 she was transferred to the Bambergers store in Newark, NJ where she worked for many years. After leaving Macys she worked as a handbag buyer for Hahne & Company in Newark.
Among her many activities she was a member of the Westfield YWCA and was active with its affiliate. She also belonged to the Rake and Hoe Garden Club of Westfield where she served as its President and Advisor. Mrs. Mayer served as Treasurer of the State Council of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, President and Treasurer of the Womans Club of Westfield as well as being the Local Affairs Chairman for the Eastern Union County Chamber of Commerce. She was also active with the League of Voters and served on the state board of the Garden Clubs of New Jersey. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield where she arranged sanctuary flowers for over 30 years.
She is survived by two daughters; Derry Ellen Rivendale, Mary L. Suarez, and a son Charles R. Mayer. She is also survived by (soon to be) six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
