Mary Lou Apgar

June 22, 1926 — February 28, 2007

Mrs. Mary Lou Apgar of Westfield, N.J. passed away on Wednesday February 28th, 2007 at the Brighton Gardens Health Center in Edison. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, her family moved to New Jersey when she was four years of age and she has spent most of her life in Westfield.

Mary Lou was a graduate of the Connecticut College for Women in New London with a degree in Psychology and received a Masters Degree in Social Work from Kean
College in 1966. She retired in 1975 as a school social worker with the Westfield Special Services. She also volunteered with the local PTA groups, the Union County Cancer Society's "Read To Recovery " program, the United Fund and as a Board Member of The Westfield Youth and Family Counseling Service. She recently worked as a volunteer reader to elementary school students. She spent many years supporting her husband, Irving, in his many activities. For many years she advocated that Rotary Clubs should admit women and when they did, she was one of the first in line. Her life in Rotary was one of service and dedicated to the Four Way Test. As a result she was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Mary Lou was predeceased by her husband, Irving Louis Apgar who died in 2001
after 53 years of marriage. She is survived by two children, Elizabeth Apgar Smith and her husband Thomas, Douglas Apgar and his wife Deborah. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Kyle, Ian and Graham Smith, and Joseph and Jaclyn Apgar
Funeral services will be held on Monday March 5th, 2007 at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield at 10 am. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday March 4th, 2007 from 2 to 4 pm. Interment Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Youth and Family Counciling Service, 233 Prospect Street, Westfield, N.J. 07090.
