MAVIS LORAINE SERAFIN A SERVICE FOR MAVIS L. SERAFIN, OF MANCHESTER, NJ, FORMALLY OF CRANFORD WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2010 AT GRAY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME 12 SPRINGFIELD AVENUE, CRANFORD, NEW JERSEY. VISITATION WILL BE FROM 9:30 AM THROUGH 10:30 AM AND BURIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD 11:30 AM AT FAIRVIEW CEMETERY IN WESTFIELD. MRS. SERAFIN PASSED AWAY ON MAY 10, 2010 AFTER A LONG ILLNESS. SHE WAS BORN IN WEST VIRGINIA. MAVIS WAS A VETERAN OF WWII AND SERVED IN THE WAVES. MAVIS MOVED TO CRANFORD IN 1960. SHE RETIRED FROM BELL LABS. SHE RECEIVED A MASTERS DEGREE IN 1980 AND TAUGHT ENGLISH AT UNION COLLEGE. MAVIS WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF CRANFORD WORKING ON MISSION PROJECTS, CROP WALK AND FEEDING THE HOMELESS. MAVIS CHAIRED THE RIVER COMMITTEE. SHE VOLUNTEERED AT LYONS VETERAN'S HOSPITAL FEEDING PATIENTS, AND SORTED CLOTHES AT MENLO PARK VETERAN'S NURSING HOME. SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 328 IN CLARK, NJ. MAVIS WAS A PAST REGENT OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND HELD MANY OFFICES INCLUDING CHAIRING THE AMERICAN HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST. SURVIVING ARE HER DAUGHTER JUDITH SJURSEN, SONS STEVEN R. AND JOHN R., 8 GRANDCHILDREN AND 10 GREATGRANDCHILDREN. THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, ANY DONATIONS BE SENT TO VAN DYKE HOSPICE, 99 ROUTE 37 WEST, TOMS RIVER, NJ 08755.
