Muriel McDonald Cook, 79, of Scotch Plains, died Tuesday February 1, 2011, at her residence. Memorial Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 PM Thursday February 3rd, 2011 at Gray's, Funeral Directors, 318 E. Broad Street Westfield. The Service of Remembrance will begin at 2:00 PM Friday February 4th, 2011 in The Presbyterian Church, 140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield. Private interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY She was the beloved wife of the late Donald Richard Cook. She is survived by two sons: William Henry Cook and his wife Carole of Westfield (NJ), Robert Edward Cook and his wife Jill of Manhattan (NY), four grandchildren: Davidson Trisler, William D. "Billy" Cook, Stefanie Cook, Katharine Cook, sisters-in-law: Hilda McDonald and Carol Kissane and her husband John, and cousin: Edna Szeliga. Mrs. Cook was an elementary school reading specialist with the New York City Public School system. She last worked with children in PS #123, Queens before retiring in 2002. She was a graduate of Columbia University, and held two Masters degrees from Adelphi University, and SUNY New Paltz. Formerly of Freeport, NY, she was a 38 year member of the First Presbyterian Church, Freeport. She served as the clerk of the church Session from 1987 until 1999. She was also a deacon, an elder, as well as serving as a youth advisor, and Sunday school teacher. She was a past member of the Church Women United, and the Presbytery of Long Island. Mrs. Cook was a past president of the Music Parents Association of Freeport, and was active with Family Service of Freeport. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to: The First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, NY, The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, or to Reading is Fundamental.
