Raymond E. Cooney

Raymond E. Cooney, 86, of Cranford, NJ died on Tuesday April 22, 2008 at the Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Ray was born in College Point, Long Island and has lived in Cranford since 1969. He was predeceased by his wife Aine ( Anne ) in 1992 and two deceased sisters Marjorie Cooney - Schneller and Lee Cooney. Surviving are many nieces and nephews. For many years Ray was employed by a number of commercial venders as an industrial hardware salesman.

Raymond was an old fashioned kind of American that loved his country, fishing, family and friends and was not afraid to show it.
He was a regular supporter of any type of charity that dealt with children; specifically the native American organizations, and Raphael's Life House, a home for unwed and abused mothers located in Elizabeth, N.J. He was admitted to Overlook Hospital and was a patient there over Easter Sunday; significant to him because he recounted a much earlier Easter Sunday experience storming the
beaches at Okinawa in World War Two.

Ray's greatest endeavor and favorite pastime was his association with the Knights of Columbus organization. In 1983 and 1984 he served as Grand Knight of the Cranford Council. He then went on to become an advisor to New Jersey State Deputy Council's, Executive Board, for three State Deputies, Dominic Calabrese, Jack Winters and Bernie McGlone. His term as District Deputy ran from 1985 thru 1989. Ray was a member of the St. John The Apostle Degree team and at one time he was a field agent for the Knights of Columbus Insurance Department and was actively involved with new membership recruiting and retention. Among Ray's other involvements were serving as Union County Federation President and attending retreats at the Loyola Retreat House in Morristown.

Friend may call on Friday April 25th at the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue, Cranford from 4 till 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday April 26th, at Saint Michael's R.C. Church, Cranford, N.J. at 9 am. Interment will follow in the Saint Mary's Cemetery, Flushing, Long Island, New York In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations may be made to Raphael's Life House, PO Box 491, Cranford, N.J. 07016
