Richard Edward Attenborough of Westfield, NJ passed away peacefully November 12 following a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease. His wife Jeanne, and daughter Suzanne, son-in-law Jack Berg, and granddaughter Cally Berg of Palo Alto, CA survive him.
Dick was born October 6, 1930 in Clarks Summit, PA, the youngest of three sons of Mildred and Albert A. Attenborough. The family moved to Scranton when he was quite young; he graduated from Central High School in 1948. He then attended Keystone Junior College, now Keystone University, later graduating in 1953 with a BA degree in Psychology from Drew University in Madison, NJ. Following two years of service in the U.S. Army, in 1955 Dick began working for Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, NJ, from which he retired in 1986. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne, in June 1956.
Dick pursued further studies at CCNY, earning an MBA in Industrial Psychology in 1962. He was a registered Psychologist, but his professional area of interest was employee surveys, particularly aptitude and attitude surveys. He taught psychology as an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson Universities during the 1970's. For 5 years Dick worked for Opinion Research Corporation in Princeton, NJ before returning to Prudential.
Dick, Jeanne and Suzanne moved to Westfield in 1964. Dick was very active in The Presbyterian Church of Westfield where he was an elder and sang bass in the church choir for over 20 years. Always quick with a joke or story, Dick will be remembered for his vibrant personality and great sense of humor. Dick enjoyed working with his hands and created a variety of wood, leather, stained glass and scrimshaw projects and taught crafts classes at the church. The banjo was his instrument, not only did he play, but he made several including scrimshaw accents. He also counseled prisoners at Rahway State Prison. He could often be found sailing his Sunfish, on Lake Owassa in Sussex County. During retirement Dick enjoyed working at Brookstone Hard to Find Tools in Short Hills Mall.
The family thanks everyone at Homeside Hospice, Clark, NJ for their loving home care over the past two years.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, November 22 at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. The family asks that donations be made to The Chancel Choir of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, 140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090, (908) 233-0301.
