Richard W. Baldwin, 91, active volunteer and devoted husband and father, has died Richard W. Baldwin, 91, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at his home in Cranford, NJ and was laid to rest on May 24 with full military honors in a private ceremony. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the Cranford Presbyterian Church, 11 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on Sept. 11, 1919, Richard “Dick” graduated from Westfield HS in 1937 and Dartmouth College in 1942. He served as a Lieutenant on the USS Dashiell during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, as well as four other medals and 10 stars. He was honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1946. Dick lived in Cranford for 62 years and worked at Morgan Stanley at the WTC Tower 2 in NYC. He retired at age 74 in 1993. Dick was very active in volunteer associations including chairmanship of the Vermont Academy Alumni, Secretary of the 1942 Dartmouth class, and co-chairmanship of Mobile Meals of Westfield. Dick was also very involved in the Presbyterian Church and over the years served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and most recently as the Chairman of the Church Investment Committee at the Cranford First Presbyterian Church. He also just completed a chapter on his experience in WWII for a soon-to-be published book, “Dartmouth at War.” Dick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Scruton Baldwin; a sister, Shirley Osborn of Bridgeport, CT; four children, Bill Baldwin, Sue Rau, Linda DiDario, Barbara Bartolomeo; eight grandchildren, and countless friends.
