Robert John Fridlington, 85, of Cranford NJ passed away on Friday January 23rd at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Rahway. He was the son of John and Clara Fridlington. Born and raised in Iowa, he attended Drake University and Columbia University after serving in the U.S Army. Robert retired from Kean University as a Professor Emeritus of History. Over the years he was a member of or served on the Cranford Historical Society, the Union County Historical Society, CRAFTS of New Jersey, the Cranford Community Development Board, and the Cranford Library Board. Robert authored several articles and books including Union County Yesterday and The Supreme Court in American Life Volume 4: The Reconstruction Court 1864-1888, and co-authored two volumes of Images of America: Cranford, with long-time friend Larry Fuhro. He was awarded the National DAR History Award Gold Medal by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Robert was laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan, son David of Cranford, and son John and daughter-in-law Rose of Wantagh, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cranford Historical Society.
