Robert Adolph Schwarz, 89, of Westfield and Brielle, NJ, and Pompano Beach, FL, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Overlook Hospital, Summit. Funeral services will begin at 10:00AM Saturday March 10, 2012 in The Presbyterian Church, 140 Mountain Ave. Westfield. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements by Gray's, Funeral Directors, Westfield. He is predeceased by his wife, Shirley in 1998, and his parents, Adolph C. and Janet D. Schwarz. He is survived by his son, Richard Schwarz and his wife, Karen of Brielle; his son, Douglas Schwarz and his wife, Susan of Westfield; and his daughter, Carol Greco and her husband, Norman; and by his sister, Jean Gillie of Westfield. He is also survived by his Grandchildren Kimberly Bongiovanni and her husband, Daniel of Brick; Kathryn Angelo and her husband, Andrew of Pt Pleasant; Richard Schwarz, Jr. of Brick; Bradford Schwarz and his wife, Mary of Hoboken; Christopher Schwarz of New York City; Kenneth Davidson and his wife, Jennifer of Westfield; Jeffrey Davidson and his wife, Kristen of Westfield; and Kyle Davidson of St. Petersburg, Florida. Additionally, 4 Great Grandchildren survive him: Gracelyn Angelo, Emma Angelo, Andrew Davidson, and Bradyn Davidson. Finally, a niece Linda Winter and her husband, Gregory, of Westfield, and a nephew, Bruce Gillie and his wife, Dana, of Scotch Plains also survive. A lifelong resident of Westfield, Robert attended Lehigh University briefly prior to enlisting in the US Navy at the beginning of World War II. Following commissioning from Naval Officer Candidate School, he attended Naval Flight Training School. Following graduation, he accepted an invitation to become a US Marine pilot, where he finished his service to this country as a Captain, USMC. Following WWII, he joined New Jersey Bell Telephone, not in the field, but at the company headquarters in Newark. During his time with NJBT, he moved into office management at the local level, working as a manager in several of the area NJ Bell business offices. In 1963, he left NJ Bell to manage real estate for Taylor Realty, a family owned business, and a position he held until recently. During these years he was active in a variety of community organizations, offering his quiet, but much sought after, level of leadership. He was President of the Westfield Lions Club and a 55-year member, Commodore of the Manasquan River Yacht Club with 45 years of membership, President of Fairbanks North Condominium Association, Pompano Beach Florida, a member of Martin Walberg American Legion Post #3, Westfield, and a 74-year member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. He was a charter member and Member Emeritus of the Roundtable Lunch Group. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 356, Westfield, NJ 07091, the Brielle EMS, PO Box 262, Brielle, NJ, 08730, or the Salvation Army.
