Robert L. Smith Star Ledger Proofreader, Cranford Resident Robert L. Smith, 72, of Cranford died suddenly on Sunday Dec. 25, 2011. Visitation and services will be held on Thursday Dec.29th, from 4:00-8:00PM, at Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Ave., Cranford. Interment will follow at a later date. Born in Newark, NJ, he graduated from the Irvington Vocational Technical High School. A veteran of the US Army, he was employed by the Star Ledger, working as a typographer, then a proofreader. An avid horseman, he was a member of the US Trotting Assn. He is survived by his loving wife: Valerie Rose (nee Markowski), three children: Michael R. and wife Nancy, Linda M. Luke and husband Paul, Stephanie S. DuBrel and husband Louis, 7 grandchildren, one great grandchild, brother: Russel J. Smith, and sister: Nancy L. Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the Robert L. Smith fund.
