Robert A. (Bob) Wessels, Sr. passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the age of 82.
Bob was raised in Brooklyn, NY and served in the US Navy during World War II. After his service in the Navy, Bob attended Columbia University, where he obtained a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Bob married his loving wife, Joan Marie Tobiason Wessels in 1956, happily celebrating 52 years of marriage. Bob has four wonderful children, Robert A. Wessels, Jr. and his wife, Townes, Susan Adele-Marie Rogers and her husband, Jimmy, Roger Thor Wessels and his wife, Dukeanna and Chris Wessels. Bob was also blessed with eight devoted grandchildren, Robert A. Wessels, III, Thomas Wessels, Jackson Wessels, Holly Rogers, Michael Wessels, Benjamin Rogers, Lindsey Wessels and Josef Wessels. He was preceded in death by his infant grandson, Charles Wessels. Bob also leaves behind his sister, Adele Prill; brother-in-law, George Prill; sister-in-law, Doris Nelson; nephew, Bob Nelson and his wife, Debbie; nieces, Carole Chalfant and her husband, John; Nancy Pratt and her husband, Bob, and Jeanne Merry and her husband, Mark.
Bob enjoyed a fulfilling career of over 36 years with Western Electric/AT&T, a career that brought him and his family from New Jersey to Dunwoody, GA. Throughout the years, Bob took his family on many adventures, which included camping trips all over the Adirondack Mountains, North Georgia's lakes, canoe trips down the Delaware River, waterskiing in Maine and road trips to Walt Disney World. Bob was an avid golfer, Yankees fan and boater.
Bob and Joan retired in 1999 to Savannah Lakes Village in McCormick, SC. He was a member of McCormick United Methodist Church, where he attended the Young at Heart Sunday School Class and the Men's Club. Bob also joined the U.S. Power Squadron, where he served as treasurer for two years.
Bob will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather (Pop-Pop). His legacy lives on in the lives of all those he has touched throughout the years.
Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, NJ.
