S. Elliott Hume Former Investment Manager Elliott Hume, age 90, sailed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011, from complications of kidney failure and cancer. He had lived in Cranford at the same address for sixty years since 1951. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cranford, where he had served the Board of Trustees. He had been a member and former treasurer of the Friends of the Cranford Public Library. Born in Newark, N.J., he was raised on Dodd Street in Montclair, N.J., graduating from the high school there. Mr. Hume graduated from Princeton University in 1942 with a bachelors degree in economics, and he received a masters degree from New York University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1967. He met the love of his life Esther Carolyn (Terry) Northwood in the Presidents Garden at Princeton University between Pearl Harbor Day and graduation. They were married in 1946 in Sparrows Point, Md. True to the end, they were married for 55 years. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as an intelligence officer in the Southwest Pacific, participating in the campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa / Ie Shima. He was on Ie Shima in August 1945 when the Japanese emissaries to the peace negotiations flew in to transfer to American planes for the trip to Manila. At that time, Ie Shima was the closest island to Japan occupied by American forces. After returning from the war, he worked in the investment field first for Citibank and later for Smith Barney Harris Upham from which he retired as Vice President in 1983. He had been involved with some of the early work on corporate pension allocations and investing. In retirement, he worked at Cranford Travel Agency, where he continued his enjoyment of travel, and enjoyed managing his investments. He was preceded in death by his wife Terry in 2001. Elliotts dedication to caring for Terry as a stroke survivor was inspiring. His survivors include daughter Kathleen of Drexel Hill, Pa., son John and daughter-in-law Susan of Basking Ridge, N.J., and two grandsons, Philip and Scot, whom he adored. He passed along his love of stamp collecting to them. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church, Springfield Avenue, Cranford. Burial services at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Friends of the Cranford Public Library (224 Walnut Avenue, Cranford, N.J. 07016), the American Heart Association (1 Union Street, Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ, 08691), or the National Kidney Foundation (30 E 33rd St, Floor 3, New York, NY 10016-5337).
