A direct descendant of U.S. President John Adams, an 8th generation member of the original Crane family and local builder, Theodore A. Crane passed away on May 6, 2007 in Genesis Healthcare in Westfield where he was a long-term patient. He was 100 years old.
He was born in 1907 on Walnut Ave. in Cranford and built several homes and helped restore numerous other residences, school, churches and professional buildings. He attended Drake Business School in 1923. He became a salesman in New York City and returned to Cranford in the mid 1930's. He was Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees at the Alliance Church in Cranford. His great-grandfather Moses Crane was the township's first tax collector. His namesake, Theodore Crane I, shared the same responsibility.
He was the son of Harry Williams Crane and Mabel Smock Crane and widowed in 1992 when his wife Dorothy passed away.
"Uncle Ted" as he was affectionately known, is survived by a sister Margaret Sheffield, a son David, a nephew Stewart, grandchildren Robin and Peter, great grandchildren Katie, Matthew, Erin, Douglas, Lauren, Davey and great great grandchild Hania.
