Thomas S. Burgess

A memorial service for Thomas S. Burgess will be held on Thursday evening, May 11, 2006 at 7 pm in The Community Presbyterian Church on Meeting House Lane in Mountainside.
Mr. Burgess age 82 passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2006 at his home in Mountainside. He was born in Newark and has resided in Mountainside for the last 55 years.
Mr. Burgess served in the US Army during World War II. He served as an infantry Unit Commander during the war. He was affiliated with the 9th Army and received a Bronze Star, The Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, THe Combat Infantry Badge and also a certificate of recognition issued by the Republic of France. He also was the recipient of the W.W. II Victory Medal and the European Theatre Awards which he received for campaigns in The Rhinelands and central Europe. He served as the Military Mayor in Hamlin Germany until relieved by British Occupational Forces.
Mr. Burgess retired in March of 1985 after working for 43 years. He was a manager of the technical staff for NJ Bell, Bell Communications Research and also AT&T in Basking Ridge.
Mr. Burgess was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a lifelong member of VFW Post 10136 in Mountainside and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was the past President of the Mountainside Lions Club. AS a member of The Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside he served as a trustee and also was a President of the trustees.
Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine (Wooley) Burgess. A daughter, Lorraine and her husband, Robert Sikorski. He is predeceased by his son, Thomas S. Burgess, Jr. who passed away in 2004.
