Vasiliki Lekas Honecker

August 10, 1929 — March 21, 2012

Vasy Honecker, 82, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. Relatives and friends are invited to the Visitation from 2-4 and 6-8PM Wednesday March 28th, at Gray Funeral Home, 318 E. Broad St., Westfield, where Trisagion service will begin at 6PM Wednesday. Funeral services will begin at 11AM Thursday March 29, 2012 in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Gallows Hill Rd., Westfield. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Born in 1929 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Honecker lived her early days in Westfield, N.J., before moving to Mountainside, where she remained for the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Westfield High School Mrs. Honecker was the daughter of the late Louis and Stella Lekas, who owned and operated Louis' Excellent Diner, a fixture in Westfield for 40 years. Mrs. Honecker worked in the diner for several decades while raising her two children. After her parents retired and sold the diner business, she became a successful realtor, first with Richard C. Fischer and later with Coldwell Banker in Westfield. Mrs. Honecker was also a founding board member of the Watts Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to providing for the betterment of Mountainside. She will always be remembered by her family as a selfless and devoted wife, mother and friend. Besides her parents, Mrs. Honecker is predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Honecker and her sister, Georgia Lekas. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Honecker Bellina of Westfield and her husband, Daniel Bellina; her son, Lee C. Honecker of Bernardsville, his wife, Lisa Salerno Honecker, and their two daughters, Candace and Cassandra; a brother-in-law, Robert A. Honecker of Mountainside, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Overlook Foundation, 36 Upper Overlook Road, P.O. Box 220, Summit, New Jersey 07902-0220.
