Brother Walter Doyle, SC Brother of the Sacred Heart
Brother Walter Doyle SC, left this life on Saturday
October 4th, 2008 at Saint Catherine's Health Care
Center in Caldwell, N.J. He was born in Newark, NJ
the son of the late James and Elizabeth Doyle. Walter entered the order of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in September 1939 at Metuchen, NJ. and
took his first Vows as a Brother in August 1944 and
his final Vows on August 9th, 1950.
Brother Walter received a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Science from Fordham University. He also holds a Doctorate in
Cytology, the study of cells, from St. John's University. He received his second Master's degree,
in Religion from St. Michael's College in Vermont. Other schools that he studied at were Loyola, Louisana State University, Cornell and Stanford.
During his career Walter taught at the following schools: Coindre Hall, Huntington, LI, 1945-1946; Saint Stanislaus, Bay St. Louis, Ms, 1946-1948; Catholic H.S. Baton Rouge, La, 1948-1949; St. Aloysius, New Orleans, 1949-1950; St Rose of Lima, Brooklyn, 1950-1954; St. Luke's, Bronx, NY, 1954-1959; Msgr McClancy, East Elmhurst, NY, 1959-1960; St Philip Neri, Bronx, NY, 1960-1961 and Bishop Reilly H.S. Fresh Meadows, NY, 1962-1972. In 1972 he returned to Msgr. McClancy where he remained until his retirement in 2001. Besides his teaching duties he also coached track, basketball, football and the debate teams, winning several championships. During his years as a teacher, he found that magic was a good tool that would hold a students attention, which was why he became a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.
Brother Walter served as: Principal of St. Luke's school; Chairman of the Science Dept. of Bishop Reilly High School; Past President of the Catholic Science Council, Diocese of Brooklyn; Past President
New York Herpetology Society; Former Vice President, New York Biology Teachers Association; Former Treasurer of The American Federation of Science Teachers Associations of New York City; former member
of the Executive Board of the American Institute of the City of New York; and was a former Supervisor of
Schools for the New York Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. He also served as Director of the Msgr. McClancy Brothers House in East Elmhurst, New York.
Surviving are a sister, Claire A. Smith of Verona, NJ
and a brother, William A and his wife Alice M. Doyle.
Also surviving are 10 nieces and nephews, 19 grand
nieces and nephews and 10 great grand nieces and nephews.

Northern Blvd., Jackson Heights, N.Y. from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Wednesday October 8th, 2008. The celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial will be
held on Thursday at Our Lady of Fatima RC Church,
Jackson Heights on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 at 10am. Interment will follow at the Brothers Cemetery in Metuchen, N.J. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to: Saint Catherine's
