Walter R. Engel 1922 – 2010 Walter Rudolph Engel, 87, of Westfield, died on Thursday, May 6th, after a long illness. The son of Lothar Frederick Engel and Gertrud Triest Engel, he was a native of Staten Island, New York and had been a Westfield resident since 1955. Walter graduated from Curtis High School on Staten Island and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity and Tau Beta Pi. He was a commissioned officer in the United States Army and served during World War II and Korea. He was a past President of the Clifton Tennis Club on Staten Island. He retired from Exxon Corporation after a 35 year career, having held positions at the Bayway Refinery in Linden and in New York. He was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield, where he served on the Board of Trustees and as Treasurer. He was also active with the Boy Scouts and a volunteer with the AARP tax preparation program. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rose Dawn Engel, and three children, Laurence P. Engel (Karin) of Westfield, Barbara Tomalonis (William) of Chatham, and Robert J. Engel (Kristin) of Chatham; as well as eight grandchildren, Gregory, Christopher, and Elizabeth Engel, Katharine and William Tomalonis, and Justin, Matthew, and Jacquelyn Engel. Visitation Monday from 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gray Funeral Home in Westfield. Funeral services Tuesday 11 am at the First Congregational Church in Westfiel. Interment is private. Arrangements are being handled by Gray Funeral Home in Westfield. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Camp Rising Sun in Rhinebeck, NY or to a favorite charity.
