Wellington Richard McDowell, known as Richard to all, was the owner of McDowells Oil Heat in Westfield NJ, a business his late father started in 1928. His parents were Fay Bert McDowell and Muriel Walton McDowell.
Richard was born in the family home in Mountainside NJ on December 16, 1929. He lived and worked in the Westfield area his entire life. Richard's older brother, the late Howard J McDowell, retired from McDowells Oil Heat in the 1970s, and Richard ran it with his son, Richard Bert McDowell, into the 1980s. Three generations of McDowells have participated in the family business over the years, and they always maintained a warm and caring relationship with their customers and friends. He served his country in the NJ National Guard, and showed his love for America in the huge flag proudly flown at his work on North Ave E, Westfield NJ.
In addition to his wife, Margaret B McDowell, he is survived by his three children: James Wellington McDowell, Patricia M Silla and Richard Bert McDowell, his 6 grandchildren,12 great-grandchildren, his beloved sister, Muriel M Stensland and many nieces and nephews.
As his time on earth was nearing the end, Richard prayed beautiful heartfelt prayers to his risen Savior the Lord Jesus Christ, bringing his friends and family members in long conversations before the Lord. He is dearly loved and missed by his family, and the memories of him are treasured.
Visitation will be at Gray Memorial Funeral Home 12 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, on Friday from 4 to 7 pm , and Saturday December 19, 2015, from 9:30 until service time. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfi
