William Frederick Hoelterling, 88 of Westfield peacefully passed away at home on March 18th, 2022. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ann Schasny Hoelterling. He is survived by his three children, William Hoelterling and wife Charlotte, James Hoelterling and Nancy Hoelterling, four grandchildren, Allison Hoelterling, William (B.J.) Hoelterling, and Karen and Kelly Heinkel. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Alexa and Christopher Hoelterling including a newly arrived great-grandson, Ronald "Ronnie" Foberg, and brother David Hoelterling and wife Joanne.
An antique car nut through and through, Bill and his wife started out by competing in road rallies. She still retained the racing sheets with their times between runs. His "Ace Deuce" had its interior refurbished by Ann and earned them awards at car shows. Starting out in the "Road Knights" Car Club then leading to him organizing the "Squires" out of Chatham, he enjoyed drag racing in the 50's and 60's in NJ, PA and NY winning many trophies. A residential insulator all his life beginning first at the North Pole Co. he later started his own company.
He resided in Berkeley Heights before marrying, then came to Westfield, where he lived for 60 years. His love of country music, as Mom always said.." when country wasn't cool", has been passed down for two generations with his grandchildren knowing the end of the lyric, "you can't rollerskate in a ....". So much fun was had, such as learning to sail "on the fly" and getting us snagged onto a channel marker pole with the wiring and mast. Or the time he dropped off his son and daughter on top of the hill (mountain) next to the old Two Guys store in Watchung at dusk to toboggan down to Route 22W using the cleared (so we thought) power line run to the bottom. He was truly "The good Samaritan" all his life, helping everyone he met.
Special thanks go out to his friend, Neil Corneliesse for his weekly visits and Pete Van Iderstine, for his support through the final weeks, along with his granddaughter, Kelly Heinkel for her exemplary care at home. Bill's graveside service will be 11AM Friday March 25, 2022, at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements by Gray Funeral Directors of Westfield.
