William Layton Smith

William Layton Smith, 86, of Westfield, died Sunday August 8, 2010, at his residence. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 PM, Friday, August 13, 2010 at Gray Funeral Home, 318 E. Broad Street, Westfield, where funeral services will begin at 10:00AM, Saturday August 14, 2010. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. He is survived by his loving wife: Kathryn Crandall Smith, three children: William Layton Smith Jr. and. his wife Deborah of Cincinnati, OH, Susan Smith Rooney of Fort Myers, FL, and Nancy Crandall Smith of Westfield, five grandchildren: William Layton Smith III, David Markey Smith, Stephen Kroll Smith, William Harold Rooney Jr., Kathryn Crandall Gollier and her husband Joshua, and sister: Eleanor Smith Eshleman of Pittsburgh, PA. Born in Plainfield, Mr. Smith had resided in Westfield since 1956. He retired from the Hudson Hosiery Company of Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was a sales representative. He was a 50 year member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Smith served in the US Navy Seabees. He graduated from Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ in 1943, and Lehigh University (PA), in 1949, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
