Captain William M. Smith age 88 of Cranford passed away on Monday, January 29 at Robert Wood Johnson at Rahway. A gathering will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Saturday in the Gray Memorial Funeral Home 12 Springfield Ave., Cranford.
Captain Smith was born in Lyndhurst and resided in Linden before moving to Cranford in 1940. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was employed for many years as a port captain with US Lines in Cranford. He retired several years ago.
He was a member of the American Export Association, Council of Master Mariners, American Merchant Marine Veterans and the Clark VFW Post # 7363.
He is survived by one brother Kenneth.
